My favourite book. Represents what the country could/is becoming through a wonderful character called Winston Smith. The plotline of Orwell's classic has been copied many times since, and has survived the test of time as being a 'masterpiece'.

I dislike it. I've been forced to read it twice for school. But I dunno...I guess part of the reason I don't like it is because it is definetly happening, even if it is going slow. But I feel that one day, our future will be just like that. I guess that's why I dislike it.

You are the only one i've talked to that actually liked the book. I haven't read it personally but some of my friends have read it for school and hated it..... *shrug* I was just noticing the difference.

Children automatically dislike something if it is for school. Mainly because they have to read it against their will.

That's not necessarily true. I've found myself liking a lot of books that were for school.
At school, I know 1 person who likes the book.

I think one of the reasons why youngsters nowadays don't like to read is because they get such rubbish in school. If they are only made to read boring books they automatically think all books are boring. The only books I have ever enjoyed were the ones I read independently. It's really a pity. They ought to overhaul the curriculum.

I do, I don't read anything that is assigned for school anymore. Shakespeare etc. I only read Fantasy/Science Fiction and just use spark notes for school ^_^. I agree with Merc. Schools are trying to ruin reading for students, it's not the students fault it's the curriculum ^_^

Why not? It seems that your response is more motivated for a desire of coverage across the board as well as posting quantity, than by providing us with a rationale for not liking this book.
It is an excellent story. Well written, tightly woven, well plotted and maintains continuity throughout. The parallel between our society today, and as it was depicted by Orwell is frighteningly similar. It is very much believed that we have allowed too many of our "freedoms" to either have been violated to a point where they aren't recognizable, or have simply disappeared.
And, as in the story, it may well be that retrieval of original rights or freedoms is almost impossible because of beaureacratic complexities.

I thought it was great. And it should be required reading in high school. High school is the last chance we get to expose many people to things different from American Idol and youtube before they become "adults" and don't have to learn anymore. Plus I'm a libertarian, so anything that makes people suspicious of government power is okay with me.
