I'm always answering "lastanime you watched" topic with the answer Pokemon. Does Pokemon count as an anime? And if it does, why do I not think it counts as anime? WHat are your views on Pokemon?

Random topic I know, but, it's a question I ponder none the less.

Pokemon is definitely anime, just like any other.
Some people probably don't see it as anime because the only Pokemon that exists is the dubbed (and edited) English version, and it existed this way for a long-long time. I bet most people don't even know the characters' real names, not all those Ash and Misty and whatever else they came up with.
If you look it up on any of the decent anime database sites, you will definitely find Pokemon -- with original character names and original voice actors.

Anime News Network (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=270)
Anime Database (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=230)
MyAnimeList (http://myanimelist.net/anime/527/Pokemon)

I'm dying to see the original series, in Japanese. Some of my very favorite seiyuu are there too... T.T But it seems to be nonexistent.

I have always considered it anime,i mean its original language is japanese no?

Maybe you think its not because its so "kiddy"

as to what i think, first off anyone that considers pokemon and digimon rips of each other is an idiot(offtopic i know),true some digimon look like sad excuses of a pokemon ripoff but they also range from that into various animals, cyborg monsters, robots, angels, and demons and thier powers transcend pokemon not only in that they are more destructive in nature but they have a branching evolutionary tree, and under some situations they can merge into god-like digimon like Omnimon and Susano-ohmon,ect. or use different methods to evolve(DNA digivolve,Bio Merging, natural evolution, slide Evolution,Spirit Evolution,Armor Digivolving,Warp Digivolving) and so on.

I also think that pokemon has greatly degraded of late, the old series up to Johto i think i thought was pretty good, but now they are just winging it clearly and i just find it to be uninteresting in the least

It's true that Pokemon is aimed at children. Even the original Japanese version is rated PG. (Whereas, for example, the original Yu-Gi-Oh is rated PG-13, so it's aimed at older children). But there are a lot of anime with pre-teen children target audience. Onegai My Melody, Chi's Sweet Home, Princess Tutu, Totoro.. and many others. Doesn't stop them from being an anime ^^

I love pokemon the show, the game and the movies. I kinda lost track of the show since I don't have cable but I do own all the movies. As far as anime movies go Pokemon is up there with my faves. There is just something about it that I guess brings out my inner child. If you've seen the pictures of my apartment you can see that there is pokemon everywhere xD It's one of the few anime my boyfriend is really in to and one of the things that really helped us click when we first started dating oddly enough lol.

Poke'mon? Well yeah basically it is really a anime. However it is a rather good show with certain eps. Though I really like the first 4 seasons. Most of my friends think they should of stopped after the first season. But thats their opinion. Over all the show now is decent i guess.

Well obviously pokemon is anime.... I mean otherwise it's like saying Naruto is a sitcom.

I haven't watched Pokemon intentionally since the end of the Orange Island series... whatever that was called. I think after Pokemon Gold&Silver, the franchise has just become too dragged out... the recent shows aren't really as interesting as the old and original episodes and also the voice casting sucks.

As GG said they're clearly winging it like they have done Naruto, and it's about time they let a 90's / early 2000's fad actually come to rest like they (eventually) did with other series such as Dragonball Z.

lol Dragon Ball Z is not over; now they're -remastering- it as if there is nothing better to do XD

As for Pokemon, i'm only interested in watching the original 276-episode series, nothing more. And if i ever get my hands on the Japanese version, i will be happy enough to die XD

OT: I find this ironic, but I never knew Pokemon was actually anime until I started watching Outlaw Star a year or so later on CNX. That was when I realised the other stuff I'd been watching (Sailor Moon is the first anime I watched... fact.) was anime and not just ironically good cartoons. >_<

I didn't even know that a thing called 'anime' existed until i seriously looked into Yu-Gi-Oh. (I mean you have to be blind to not notice the obvious censorship, so naturally i got curious, which is how i started finding out about other stuff, Pokemon included).

Pokemon is an anime! No question. The characters, the artwork, the music, the seiyuu, the language and so on, are all characteristic of Japanese anime. It is almost like a toned-down Inuyasha.

And the movies are oustanding. The graphics, and effects, and music, all of it--are all outstanding.

As Nyuu said, it has a quality that brings out the inner-child. Of course, with some of us, that child is never too very far from the surface, but that's off-topic. Pokemon is delightful, charming, and has just enough new story lines to keep it from becoming boring.

I prefer Misty over Dawn, though. Just doesn't have the same appeal that Misty did. Just a side opinion.

But, yeah, Pokemon is an anime.

It is an anime and one that has done so much for making anime a helluvah lot more mainstream and viewed less as that creepy guy who looks japanese things a bit too much!

Gotta catch em all!

Well, my posting here is pretty much pointless now, lol. It's now a proven fact (by majority vote) that pokemon is an anime.
In my opinion, as far as anime goes, pokemon is no longer worthy of being grouped with the likes of Ouran High School Host Club, Black Cat, and so forth. It has declined greatly recently, as have the games (except Pokemon Ranger - Shadows of Almia. That's surprisingly fantastic).
Pokemon is still an anime, in terms of it's style and it's japanese roots, but it's nowhere near as good as most other anime these days.

Whether it's as good or not as good is a matter of opinion. Pokemon has fans, quite a lot. I personally think that it's silly even trying to compare a shounen adventure like Pokemon with a reverse harem shoujo like Ouran :P They're just too far apart, genre and target audience-wise.

Yes, it is. A matter of opinion.

And, yes, it does. Have quite a lot of fans. Of which I am one. And many other members, not only here, but internationally.

Sometimes, if one looks a little bit more deeply, they may find value beyond a surface attraction or appeal, or even recognizing that not every anime can continue to meet one's expectations because they may have outgrown a particular anime or even genre. Sometimes, it may be better to just leave false or inappropriate comparisons alone and move on to whatever more appeals to them.

But, this is an anime chat forum, where many different views, attitudes, and opinions are welcome. Up to a point. That point being where the "chat" becomes arrogant and possibly offensive.

We have members that are easily in the Pokemon target audience profile. And others, a little bit beyond the age profile, but who can still appreciate the qualities of any anime for its artistic and creative value.

Like me. ^_^

While you may believe pokemon has declined and not kept up with these newer anime, i think that is simply a matter of opinion. I would be much more inclined to watch an older era anime than to watch a new one, simply because i enjoy older ones. That's MY opinion.

but for anyone to argue that pokemon is not an anime is probably misguided. pokemon is definitely a quintessential anime!

Polemon is a classic. And it continues to draw a fan base of all ages and gender. If it had, in fact, declined, it wouldn't continue to be as popular as it is among so many people all over the world, old and young.

And, if one looks carefully enough, they'll notice that many of the newer anime could have and probably did use Pokemon as a model for success.

But none that I know of has been able to achieve or create characters anywhere near the appeal and consistent character development shown by Pikachu and Meowth.

The bottom line, here, is really very simple. If you don't like it, or any anime for whatever reason, don't watch it. That way everybody is happy. The ones who like will continue to be delighted. Those that prefer something else, won't be disappointed.

And those that have really strong attitudes about all of this, might want to think about writing up their conclusions and presenting them to the Reviews Editors for inclusion in that thread.

btw, I believe a new Pokemon movie is scheduled for release, May, 2009. ^^
