deem this unfit if you may, but i'm in desperate need of a GOOD anime.
my love for anime itself has been waning almost to the point of being nonexistant in the past year. since my friends left for college, i have plenty of spare time on my hands to subject myself to further anime love. i'm semi-picky, so i'll list anime that i really enjoy/enjoyed:
Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Ayakashi, Loveless, Haibane-Renmei, Hellsing, Full Metal Alchemist, Yu Yu Hakusho, FLCL, Azumanga Daioh, etc.
I am not a fan of the long winded series like Naruto, Bleach, Inuyasha, etc.
I would watch a horror anime before i'd watch a comedy, but i really like both. I like the way Trigun/Bebop mixed humor with drama and tragedy.
I like unique art styles, very developed characters/plot. I really enjoy anime about ancient japan or japanese culture...I'm also a fan of older anime more than the newer. But i'm really willing to try anything. anyone and everyone can reply, i'm desperate!

did you ever finish Mononoke yet? D:
I shall recommend to you -- Baccano! if you haven't seen it already. It's only 13 epsiodes + 3 episodes side story. Very interesting character line-up, I can't even pick who I like more o.o In fact it reminded me a lot of Cowboy Bebop. Can't quite point a finger at what exactly is similar, but i kept getting the same feeling. The story is jumping from past to present like crazy and it may be a little difficult to keep up at first, but trust me, all the story pieces actually connect and it's awesome xD Great action, some supernatural elements. Also, there is quite enough of graphic violence, which i can't stand, but i still gave it a 10/10. So i would really really recommend it :)

my problem with mononoke is that i had to watch the first episode of the bakeneko arc multiple times to get into it...but i'm hoping to start it up again. one of my major weak points is my inability to focus on an episode of something if i'm watching it on a computer.

I can't really focus well on a computer either. Unless my internet isn't working and all i have is anime xD Do you have a dvd player? Most dvd players these days play .avi formats just fine, even if you made the CD/DVD yourself. Sometimes i just burn anime on dvds and watch it on tv without distractions ;P (that only applies to downloaded anime of course ^^;; )

sadly, for being so 'computer savvy', i am completely dvd-burning-inept. i just can't wrap my head around how to do it. if you'd be willing to teach me how to do it, i'd be more than willing to watch them on dvd. if you have msn or something, feel free to pm me and i'll give you my address.

Have you seen Amatsuki yet? I think it fits the description of what you're looking for.
If you've watched Cowboy Bebop you really should watch Outlaw Star.

well, here's my list of anime i plan to start:
Baccano!
Samurai X OVAs
Serial Experiments Lain
Hellsing Ultimate OVA
Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad
i'm thinking about NGE, Outlaw Star, and Tenchi Muyo!
if you have any other series you really nejoy that you'd like to recommend, i'd love to hear it.
Brian, what's Amatsuki about?

Amatsuki is about this boy who goes into museum kind of thing, where he can look at Japan of Edo Period while wearing special glasses. Somehow, while wandering around 'ancient' Japan (still the 'museum' irl), he loses one of his eyes to the monster that attacks him there. He gets saved by the locals, but is unable to return. And I didn't get past episode 2 so I don't know much more xD No, it's good, I didn't drop it or anything. There were no subs yet at that time so I had to put it on hold. I'm not sure how it fits the description though, aside from being set in Ancient Japan lol

sense you'll watch NGE.Might I reccomend its little underappreciated brother Rahxephon?
its more focused on romance, aztec, and sound rather then psychology and christianity but i found i liked it more.
if your looking for a few good slice of lifes how about Clannad,Noein The other Self,or Gunslinger Girl
Clannad is about these highschool kids with thier share of problems.the main character for example has a worthless drunkard for a father, the female lead is retaking a grade in shool as she gets so sick she couldnt attend for a year.which reminds me theres an epilogue series coming out soon.
This series has alot to do with family
Gunslinger Girl isnt anything like Madlax eith sexy gunslingers fighting about like you might think, its a story about brainwashed kids turned into assasins,it has more to do with them retaining thier humanity and thier twisted perception of what a child should and shouldnt do.2 seasons long
Noein has an odd artstyle that isnt what one would expect from an anime, but dont let that turn you off.Its about these kids that go about living out thier lives trying to be normal as a war fought between 2 possible futures goes on and emerges in thier world.it has a little to do with quantum physics if your into that.

^ My most favoritest yet. I don't normally like drama but this was really good. Each child has a "handler" to control them, and each handler has to struggle with using a child as an assassin. The episodes are pretty much stand-alone, so you don't have to try to keep up with who's who. And the artwork is nice. It's tragic, though.

@Brian, why don't you give 'Welcome to the NHK' a try? dark comedy, satire, introspection, pretty disturbing at times, but it was great 8)
