View Full Version : Toonami's Final Night - 8/20/08

for over 11 years, toonami has been the gateway to many, many die-hard anime fans and cartoon lovers. i can safely say that toonami introduced me to sailor moon, rurouni kenshin and tenchi muyo! over 7 years ago.
here is a piece of an article about the cancellation on wikipedia:
"Cancellation
On September 20, 2008, Cartoon Network canceled the block and has aired its final transmission. Employees who worked on the block will be going to other parts of the channel. Anime will be mostly handled by Adult Swim, and there will be a action block replacing Toonami on Friday nights afterwards. Toonami Jetstream will remain without the Toonami name.At the end of Toonami's final airing, the host, voiced by Steven Blum, ended the block by saying "bang"."
i just thought i'd leave this little memorial here. though toonami went downhill a few years ago, it still hurt my heart to hear Tom say 'bang'.
awww this is so sad Toonami also helped me get in to anime. I'll never forget those days coming home from school and watching sailor moon. :(

while it didnt impact me the same way it shocked me to hear final transmisson
ill miss the lil robo-dood,toonami was the only thing that interested me anymore after the good non-anime cartoons were removed.
ill have to watch this "action" block to see how it compares
:(
Toonami (Or back when I first heard of it - CNX) was what got me into anime. O_o; The first anime I ever watched on that channel was Outlaw Star. Seriously. I was already watching Dragonball Z and stuff on Cartoon Network but Toonami just changed everything for me.
Just sucks that it's gone. Maybe it'll take a little longer over the pond (i.e. here.) for it to die out, as is usually the case with US - UK broadcasting.
Toonami is still gonna be missed. Was a great channel, and aired many great shows. Hell, must be the only TV channel I know of that aired what other people would consider "kids cartoons with bad language." as Outlaw Star was never edited, and I heard the "You're pissed because we got the sword back?" comment Ryoko says on Tenchi Muyo at 2pm in the afternoon.
xD.

they put up two episodes of NGE a few years back, HEAVILY edited, and decided it just wasn't worth the fight to try to edit everything out for kids.
but i remember hearing Sanoske from Kenshin say 'pissed' and being shocked/amazed as a small child.
Kenshin was never aired over here. O.o
And Outlaw Star was always aired after 10pm (i.e. after watershed) so they could technically get away with the swearing.
I still found it amazing they got away with the Tenchi Muyo one, though.

if i remember right they cut out the fact Ryoko got drunk and put bathing suits on them when they were in the onsen
but yeah,it introduced me to Outlaw Star, then my friend introduced me to the unaired episodes

And since Toonami died, CN and the shows it airs grow steadily worse and worse. The mind set of the owners and the producers along with the program directors is totally Puritanical, medieval, red-neck twisted.
No blood, no violence, no swearing, no nudity etc., allowed through anime. But we can see way worse with Metalocalypse, Squidbillies, Super Jail, and even Robot Chicken and Family Guy.
I mean what's appealing about cursing your daughter, providing sex education through coitus in the ear (wtf? that isn't even funny much less sensible), and telling her to get used to a man's farts and underarm stink, and beating both your daughter and your wife to bloody pulps? Or drowning her (Lois) by driving your car into a lake? etc., etc.
And the incestuous and drunkeness allowed on Moral Orel? These are okay, but anime is not? They (Japanese anime) are so heavily censored, dubbed and subbed that the shows are totally fragmented so as to not make sense.
I don't see how the current crap--and that's what is, and worse--can ever replace Sailor Moon, Cowboy BeBop, Trigun, Ghost In The Shell, etc., etc.
The mentality is ignorant, moralistically arrogant, red-necked, bible- pounding stupid!
I'm waiting for them to begin attacking Kim Possible. They've killed everything else.
Even though these are not true anime, Big O, Teen Titans, Totally Spies and many others aren't shown any more. Futurama died a while back and some of its episodes are aired by Comedy Central.
I'm waiting for them to start dismembering Scooby Doo.
Welcome to the 21st Century kids! Where we know what will damage you morally and anything that even looks like a panty-shot or too-tight clothing, or too-short skirts, or revealing tops, or bare-chested men with tight trousers will be cast off to the Devil, for your own good.
Come, instead, to the nice clean Super Jail and the idiotic blood-letting of Metalocalypse, and learn how to think and behave properly. And as long as you're here, let's do it in the ear. God doesn't mind that.
What the unholy fu*k?
Rant over. >.<
Which is why I'm glad I don't rely on television for sanity... it's like Cartoon Network are trying to destroy anime and turn it into a nonexiistant fable. No Dragonball Z, no Transformers, nothing.
I mean jeez, Cartoon Network probably kickstarted the mainstream anime and their respective fans, spinoffs, and popularity with other non-aired, much better series. Now what, are they trying to take it away? =/
if i remember right they cut out the fact Ryoko got drunk and put bathing suits on them when they were in the onsen
but yeah,it introduced me to Outlaw Star, then my friend introduced me to the unaired episodesPsh. They never cut any of the episodes here. I saw the Tenrei ep at like 10pm or something. I didn't think Cartoon Network was capable of swearing let alone nudity. :lol1:

Lucky Mac,they cut the episode that showed how gene got his blackhole caster bullets, and even cut out the epilogue that showed gene with that haircut at the end.
And Im sure they cut out things here and there...oh yeah, they also drew a bikini on Melfina when she's in the Outlaw Star's core. That wasnt even needed, sure she's nude but the blocks in the core are positioned so you cant see anything anyway
I know what you mean frank, here i was planning to wait for AS to finish its rollout so i could watch Moribito(5am on saturday night/sunday morning last i checked) as the previous week they were reairing FMA and whatnot, then i come nad see random cartoon characters ripping off limbs, breaking bones, eating each other alive WTF!!?,after that i boycotted CN and its been the same for the past 3 weeks for me.It just isnt worth it watching those shows for 6hrs for one anime episode.Compared to that Evangelion would be child friendly.
I have no idea why they think someone would watch that, how i miss the good old days of Powerpuff Girls,Courage the Cowardly Dog,and looney tunes....at least we have CN's successor Jetix. They may air edited anime thats dumbed down for kids but its alot better then going through the horror of Prison Break or whatever

LoL dude, she was naked in that suitcase, naked in the ship core, they totally didn't cut anything
except the little intermission bit with the outlaw star logo in the middle for advert breaks. O o;
but seriously, CN SUCKS! all the good shows are gone. even nickleodeon airs crap now. What happened to invader zim? I had to get ahold of that through downloads, it's not even on DVD here - -'
before you know it cartoon violence will be banned and future generations will think road runner is vulgar. feh

I haven't seen Power Puff Girls in I don't know how long.
I'm noticing that the scenes in Inuyasha where the characters were nude--like in swimming holes and bathtubs, and never anything really defined, but still bare, have either been cut or have been subbed (new or altered material).
Courage is still on but it's creepy and violent.
I don't know where ReBoot went.
Nothing is there anymore. Doesn't matter if it was a Toonami show or CN or AS, CN is turning out more pablum than ever.
Like GooseBumps? wtf is that? The name, Stein, doesn't have that much magic.
And more full-length movies that are censored re-runs.
Pokemon is still around, but I think the few "provocative" scenes have been altered.
DBZ is gone.
All the Gundams are gone.
FLCL, when it's shown, is only like one episode, then it's forgotten again.
All gone dude. :(
Lain is gone.
.hack is gone.
Alexander is gone.
Eureka is gone.
DeathNote is fragmented.
Blood and Blood + are gone or fragmented terribly.
Samurai Champloo is gone.
GITSSAC is gone.
Code Geass was never shown too much, but it's gone.
That French thing, I can never remember the name, that Mac and I like so much is gone. the one with Aelita.
Sailor Moon. Forget it. that series hasn't been on for about 8 years.
Bleach is fragmented and slowly being killed
It's a long list, and it continues on.
Many, many people were introduced to anime through CN, AS, and Toonami. And for different reasons, many people depend on TV for their entertainment like anime. Good anime. Not garbage. But it's all being taken over by Scooby Doo re-runs of full-length movies that have been sanitized. Or by other full-length non-anime showings.
Saul, The Mole Man? Insane
More and more Family Guy with that lecherous pervert and that really creepy pedo.
Venture Brothers oh yeah.
Aqua Teen hunger Force is totally insane and stupid
Sea Lab 2021 is weird and never did make much sense, but it makes less now.
The Tim and Eric Show? Wtf is attractive about that kind of perverted behavior? It's just plain stupid.
Harvey Birdman? Still around sort of, but it was always fragmented.
FMA gets thrown in, now and then but not consistently.
Naruto? Forget it. Gone.
But AS throws up all kinds of crap telling how popular the different shows are, when the figures they give are usually for hand-held games, and the ones for the programs that you're "supposed to be watching, because they're better for you," are really so small, number-wise, it's a joke.
YuGiOh is gone.
Yu Yu Hakasho is gone.
Prince Of Tennis died. Or was killed.
One Piece is gone.
You've got Transformers.
Robot Boy
Ben 10
Ben 10 Alien Force (which isn't too bad, really) Just getting repetetive.
Total Drama Island (which is now re-run after re-run)
I feel like I'm delivering a eulogy. Sorry.
Worst part is I can't do anything about it. Neither can all the people that can't afford to buy CDs or tapes and who don't have players
Except, like you did, GG, boycott CN and AS and give my viewing time and spending dollars from their ads to someone else.
And import my anime through CDs, tapes, manga, and download whatever other stuff I don't want to/can't import.

I know its been over a year since this thread was put up but I've got strong feelings about Cartoon Networks choices on closing Toonami as well. Though I went through my on and off periods of watching it, it in fact did start my anime craving phase with Sailor Moon, DBZ, Cowboy Bebop, and Tenchi Muyo. I came home every afternoon to watch my favorite shows ( I loved Reboot too ^_^) and I really do miss the days when I could get such easy access to my favorite shows. Now they will sporadically show some Bebop and Ghost in the Shell but its been phased out by crappy homemade fifteen minute shows that usually make no sense and are completely random!
I really do miss the old days when cartoons were made with quality, thats all I'm gonna say about that.

Space Ghost is old school so I'm cool with him!

Has it been that long? Seems like yesterday I was ranting about this.
Well, the rant continues. Some of the programs I mentioned, the ones that were new, are gone, but it's still all crap.
Adult Swim, on Saturdays, from 1 AM to 5 AM will give you reruns of Bleach, FMA, GITS, and a couple others, but nothing significant.
Last I saw, Futurama had gone to Comedy Central. Even though not strictly anime, still, many of the programs that we all used to watch are gone and probably will never come back.
Now we get stuff like
6teen
Total Drama Island/Action (rerun after rerun!)
King of the Hill (no offense to members that like this moralistic preaching)
Destroy, Build, Destroy. wtf?
Survive This. stupid. I've done wildreness camping. they just set parameters to have shock value.
Okay, it's a network, a cartoon network, and probably should have many offerings for a wide range of audiences--like infantile pre-schoolers to ancient, crusty barnacles like me. lol
Whiich reminds me of The Misadventures of Flapjack. cute. sometimes. that's the best I can say for it.
I don't pay serious attention to anything that Cartoon Channel has, anymore. It's either going to be trash, only good for background noise, or re-runs only, or I'll go to Disney Channel for some stuff.
Or Comedy Central for Futurama.
But it's all like meh, anymore. TV, anyway.
No offense intended to anyone that does like the shows I've sort of "slammed." Srsly.
the rant continues. lol
Space Ghost is totally insane btw. ^_~

Haha s'k cool, besides I don't watch anything on Disney... its very kid oriented and its hard for me to get into. But doesn't it seem nowadays that everything is constantly being reruned? No one puts efforts into making new episodes. I mean once in awhile they make new episodes of Futurama, or some of the Adult Swim cartoons but thats about it.
Did they cancel Foster's home for imaginary friends or is it just over with?
Flap Jack is cute but I only watch it everyonce in awhile. Honestly if I want to see any of my favorite animes anymore I have to buy an expensive box set for about 40-80 dollars.... Everything is so expensive now, and I usually try to hold on to as much money as possible.
Space Ghost use to make more sense when I was a kid, its only when Adult Swim got completely random that it got EXTREMELY crazy. Come on it had Byork and Carrot Top on it among others! I can never hate Space Ghost.
s'k if ya don't care for it, its an aquired taste XP

I didn't say I didn't care for it. Just that it was totally insane. Which it was and is. For me.
but I haven't seen a Space Ghost ep in a long, long time.
Disney Channel is good for those Fleemco kids, you know, The Replacements, then Kim Possible. Still a kid at heart, I guess. Also Phineas and Ferb (LOL) and some movies.
Futurama new episodes? Could be, but I haven't seen any. Seen episodes I hadn't seen before, but I don't think they were new.
I think Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends is totally gone. I remember seeing an episode that was billed as the finale to the entire show.
Long and short: CN sux major, AS sux more major, and ComCast is the villain behind all of it. I think.
