Lady Vamp

Okay, so I've started a new story with the intention of actually finishing it. I have the plotline all mapped out and I'm almost done with outlining each different chapter separately, so there is absolutely no reason I shouldn't be able to finish this... ((Yeah right, like that'll stop me from procrastinating...))
Anyways, here's part of chapter 1.
“Lily.”
I continued to stare at the dirty white bricks ahead of me.
“Lily, stop.”
“…Hm?” I asked, wrenching my thoughts away from wherever it was they were going. I saw my friend, Luna, glaring at me peevishly. My eyebrows furrowed and she let out a loud, exasperated sigh, looking pointedly at my mouth. It was only then that I realized that my thumbnail was between my teeth and halfway chewed off.
“Oh…” I said, slightly embarrassed. This was my newest thing I was trying to stop. For Luna and I, it was as if every week was the week after New Years’, when you had something that you swore to yourself that you were going to stop or start or finish or end, only with us we actually followed through with it even if we lost interest.
Needless to say, I was being very bad about this. It was only 3rd period and it was the second time she’d had to stop me from gnawing my entire hand off. She was being much better about her goal. She hadn’t cracked her knuckles in two weeks.
“Where’s everyone else? They should be here by now,” I asked, annoyed. Our entire group had 3rd period free.
“Speak of the devils,” Luna said, nodding at the four people walking towards us. Rebecca, Hayden, Max, Ryker, and Sylvia.
“Where were you? That’s ten minutes of our free that you’ve wasted,” I said peevishly, wrinkling my nose.
“We got caught up by Bernson,” Sylvia explained as everyone sat in their accustomed place around the table – were in the library, at one of the smallish round tables. "Please keep your voice down while in the library" signs around us went ignored.
“Ew. What did he want this time?” Luna asked, her nose wrinkled just as mine was.
“Same old, same old – to ask Syl why she hasn’t turned in any homework for a month,” Max answered, dodging a swipe from Sylvia.
“Oh, shut up, you hypocrite. As if you do any of your homework.”
“Hmm… fair enough. Although, if you must know, I’ve been much better about it lately.”
“And speaking of homework-“
“Yeah, you’re right, we have that science test-“
“Italian… stupid… oh, where’s my binder?”
The air was filled with the general sounds of jostling along with muttered curses and exclamations as we each found what we needed. It was kind of funny; none of us ever got as much homework done during 3rd period as we thought we would.
“So, what’s the update? How’s everyone doing?” Rebecca asked in her tiny voice. She wasn’t shy, not really, yet her voice was –there was no other word for it- small. She was the one who had come up with this special little kum-bay-yah ritual we did every day when she finished reading one of her psychology books. We each had to share what was new in our daily lives I smiled. With all her peace-and-friendship talks, you just had to love sweet little Rebecca.
“Well,” Luna started, “Jake is back from college.”
Jake was Luna’s older brother and had been at college for two years now. She had admitted that she missed having him around (he was pretty cool as far as older brothers go), but she relished the fact that the basement was devoid of his Master Chief cutout and Xbox. She was more of a PlayStation girl, like me.
“What did he say when he saw the basement?” Ryker asked, smirking.
“Let’s just say that I didn’t know the f-bomb could be used that many times in a sentence and not be redundant.”
We all s******ed; the PS2 was not the only new addition. There were also numerous posters of various video game guys, as well as the moon and stars painted –yes, painted- on the once-black ceiling.
“What about you, Lily?” Rebecca asked, going in our standard counter-clockwise 3rd period checkup.
“Nothing new, I guess. Mom was in one of her moods last night, so I spent most of my time in my room,” I said. Various noises of amusement came from the circle. They all knew that “mood” meant my mother was so fascinated with a new obsession –embroidery, yoga, piano classes, etc- that she would either force you to join her on her journey of self-discovery or you would be completely ignored. I always chose the latter. Hey, I loved my mom, but I was not wasting an entire night to listening to the benefits of eggshell white over off-white for the kitchen walls. I just wasn’t.
“Ryker?”
“Not much for me, either. Soccer practice seemed to drag on forever last night. Landstrom made us run about fifty laps on the track,” he said, rolling his eyes.
“Poor baby,” Luna said, smiling. Ryker laughed and we all looked away and made gagging noises as they pecked lightly on the lips.
“Ew, guys, seriously. Enough with the PDA already,” Max scolded.
“Sorry, sorry…” Luna said in a long-suffering voice, but she was still grinning.
She and Ryker had been going out for a little over a year; we had all known it was going to happen eventually. The seven of us had grown up together and everyone knew that Luna and Ryker fitted together like yin and yang.
“Max? Putting aside your disgust for public displays of affection?” Rebecca asked.
“Oh, not much for me either. Lupe was being a pain yesterday – all he wanted to do was play tug-of-war.”
Lupe was Max’s new German Shepherd-Lab mix puppy. He was black with a white spot on his chest and had ruled Max’s house since he moved in two weeks ago. I rolled my eyes. Max was such a softie for animals, though dogs were his favorite. I, on the other hand, had been a cat person since 2nd grade.
“All right, well as for me,” Rebecca said, clearing her throat, “Dad tried to get me to eat meat yesterday. He thinks I’m not getting enough protein and that’s why I’ve been so moody lately. Never mind the fact that I have my period and the whole blood-spilling-out-of-my-“
“Whoa, waaaaaaaaaay too much information!!” Max protested, holding his hands up. It took me a few minutes to keep my giggling under control.
“Max, when are you going to get over this weird little phobia of yours? You hang out with five girls!” I exclaimed, rolling my eyes.
“Even still. Certain things should not be discussed in front of anyone who possesses a Y-chromosome,” he quipped. He pounded Ryker. Luna and I shared a look that clearly expressed how hard we were trying not to roll our eyes.
“So, Sylvia? Anything new?” Rebecca asked.
“Mm, not much. Rex got out of his cage last night. We found him in the sofa two hours later,” she said, laughing. Rex was her pet snake; poisonous green and about five feet long.
“How about you, Hayden?”
“Oh, the usual. Mom called – Aunt Pat is still doing pretty bad, so she’s going to have to stay for a few more days. We’re anticipating her being back about mid-July,” she answered, rolling her eyes. Hayden’s elderly aunt had a bad bout of the flu and her mother had left to take care of her about a month ago, promising it would only be a week or two. Snickers went around the table, but were hastily stifled as a stern-looking librarian came over to glare at us. The rest of my friends gave each other the librarians-are-dorks look, but I concentrated on the swirl I was drawing in my English notebook. I had always kind of wanted to be a librarian. Being surrounded by all those books and being paid for it? Heck yes.
“So what are everyone’s plans for the weekend?” Rebecca asked once the librarian left.
“Ryker and I are going to see Prom Night. Anyone wanna come with us?” Luna asked, looking first at me and then scanning her head around the rest of the table.
“Can’t… My dad wants me to help him paint the garage,” Sylvia said, a sour look on her face.
“I’ve got that huge science report… A thousand words about chromosomes and cytoplasm…” Rebecca explained, annoyed. She sat back in her chair and crossed her arms over her chest.
“I’m game,” I answered.
“Me too,” Max said quietly, glancing up from math worksheet. His gaze flickered from me and Luna.
“I can’t… I have to go up and visit my aunt and mom,” Hayden said, pouting.
“Alright, it’s no big deal. So I guess it’s just going to be Me, Ryker, Max, and Lily?” Luna asked.
“Seems that way,” I nodded.
Before she could respond, three legato bells warned us that 3rd period was over. A groan sprang from all of our lips as we shoved our assorted binders, pencils, pens, worksheets, folders, and notebooks back into our backpacks. We all walked out of the library and went our separate ways, Luna and I going to the left and everyone else taking a right.
“Bye!” we said in unison. Laughter ensued.
...Thoughts?
