Forum Upgrade

Hey all,
as you may have noticed the forum has been upgraded. There still are a few things we have to do like bring back the shoutbox and Asuka, but before that we are going to fix user permissions since right now everyone lost their administrative privileges. This is something Mac has to do though, since he knows who moderated what. Right now I'm working to bring back the shoutbox where I hope there won't be any more database issues. If you notice any issues with your account or anything wrong with the forum, please let me know in here. I will continue to update this thread to let you know about further changes.

Yesterday there was a question asking why Rhoey is still supermod. Well that's not really true. Some of you may notice under their name a Moderator title. That's because of the old hack in the phpBB2 and will be fixed soon. Current staff members are listed in the Administrators group and Global Moderators group. You can check them up in the index by clicking on the group in the legend at the bottom of the page.

Also ... this database is a bit old, the backup is dated 13.4.2008, so some posts posted between today and the 13th are missing. I really do apologize for this, but to download the old database, import it in my server and do the conversion takes approximately two days, so unless I completely close the forum I can't make a decent backup of all the posts. v_v;;

EDIT: During my playing with the shoutbox (which is not ready yet) Mac went hunting for themes. He opened a thread in Suggestions (http://www.animechatforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=73&p=542431) for you to help us make the forum better. While we are waiting for replies we went ahead and already installed one. It's not set as default since we want some feedback about it first. You can change to the theme in the User Control Panel (http://www.animechatforums.com/forum/ucp.php?i=165).

1. Since we all like to test things on our own, see anime on our own we don't want reviews or secrets about a specific theme to be forced on us. Well that's why this BBCode was created. I think I don't need to explain anything about it, since it's self explanatory. Just go with your mouse over it. :P

2. Who wants to make their text shine? I certainly do. :P

And my text is glowing blue ;)
This thing works only on Internet Explorer and some other Internet Explorer based browsers. This means Firefox users won't be able to see it. v_v;

3. Do you want to post a video on the boards. Yes, here is the way: Upload it on YouTube, and post the video ID using the YouTube tag.
What's the video ID? The video ID is the last part of the URL: "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Video ID"

4. Before I was looking to change my font style in my posts, but I was unlucky. I don't seem to find the font selector for my posts. I guess it doesn't exist. Well ... considering that I made one myself. Here her is the new BBCode tag that changes the text. This tag works based on your installed fonts in the operating system, so it's good we stick to fonts installed by default. Whatever, just make sure you type the font name correctly when you use it. ;)

Usage (without the asterisk): [*font=courier]text[/font]

5. Ever thought about aligning text? No, well consider it ... here is how:
- by aligning text left.
- by aligning text towards the center.
or by aligning text right.

Usage (without the asterisk):
- [*left]- by aligning text left.[/left]
- [*center]- by aligning text towards the center.[/center]
- [*right]or by aligning text right.[/right]

6. Hmm ... don't know how could be used. I will leave it to your imagination:

Ah, no, making BBCode tags at 3AM is just a bad idea. In the BBCode I forgot to tell the script I want the text black as well. :P

Mac & Flash On this thread, I don't have any options. None showing, anyway. And under Options: it shows BBCode is off. No other options. No colors, nothing. But I had my UCP set for all this stuff to be on.

Is a bug, or just those things aren't available to me here?

On this thread, "Forum Upgrade," the tag bar at the top of the dialog box isn't there.

the color wheel or color choices aren't showing.

The options seen under "Options" is only "BBC Code is OFF"

On my UCP, everything is set for ON except Flash

All these things show on all the other threads except this one.

I don't understand it, either, but I figured it was supposed to be that way for this thread. Guess not, eh? Can be fixed? Please?

I should thank you frank. It's actually you bringing this up that me and Flash discovered that there is a plethora of mess regarding permissions on the website.

It was probably that causing why it didn't work. We're fixing the problem, so you probably momentarily lost permission again.

We rearranged the forum positions so you might be confused about where everything went. The names of the forums were all left as they were, we just switched their positions. Most of the things went in the new section called Site Stuff (http://www.animechatforums.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=3). The section was created to centralize all the site's activities. We lost the Suggestions section though. All the threads in that forum were moved to the Feedback and Suggestions (http://www.animechatforums.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=19) forum. That is everything for now and I really hope nobody gets lost :P

I checked all of the Icy Phoenix ones Mac. Including those two: Milky Way & Autumn Gold. They look like dental selaesmans order forms. Don't know where that came from, but they're even more dull than prosilverr.

I saw on the glacier notes either style, Premium or Lite tht the background could be fixed and non-rotating headers. Would that= no animation? that might solve that problem of mine, and allow for a middle of the road default theme, until a new member can actually pick the one he/she wants.

I could have sworn I posted this. @_@ Maybe somewhere else, probably.

Well ... there is an update today. I brought back the Gallery. Sadly I couldn't import the old Gallery into this one so all the entries have been lost. If anyone wants the pictures back let me know and I will upload them in a ZIP file for everyone to download.

Now, since the first thing Mac asked me when I showed him this piece of code was "How do you create a gallery?" I'm going to answer this question for everyone. The answer is "You can't!". The gallery itself creates a member gallery when you first upload a picture. Of course we can make public galleries, too (from the ACP), but honestly I would rather reserve that for CGs. But that's something I still have to discuss with Mac.

So enjoy your private gallery and "don't spam it with random images". ^_^

BTW: Under posts you will see an annoying white button to access your own gallery (when you will have one). Don't mind it ... I will fix that as soon as I will have some time to play with PhotoShop. This issue is related to all themes with the exception of Glacier.

Incidentally, for the last 2 days I've been on prosilver. It seemed to be the only one, really that I wasn't losing images on after being open for a few minutes. Glacier seems to be working okay, now. So I'll probably hang on this for today, just to make sure.

The problems may have been between Yahoo messing around :? the library security protocols, :? and my trying to override everything. :? Whatever the reasons, the pages seem to behave themselves properly now.

Ah, will be fixing it as soon as possible then. Right now I'm not able to play with it, since I came home and here I don't have any software to edit the CSS.

OK ... here is a new update. Nothing really changed on the site, since I'm not at home right now and can't edit or add anything, but I wasn't really sitting on my couch doing nothing. Here I compiled a list of things that need to be done based on old feedback. I'm sure I missed a lot, but I hope it's enough for a basic idea. Of course you can post here or PM me or Mac about things you would like to see on the site, but it's not already on the list.

So, this is the to-do list and what has been already added:

Directly related to the forum:
Update the forum to phpbb 2.0.23 or phpbb 3.0.1 - DONE ... updated to vBulletin
Fix all forum bugs, such as PM errors, time errors, dead post pages, lag, etc. - DONE
Add a search options to search for users by name.. - DONE ... the search function came with the forum
Update the forum with new, fresh layouts and fix little layouts imperfections - ALMOST DONE ... installed AcidTech Red and CodeBlack. We still need to change a few forum icons
Update the forum registration with stronger anti-bot protection. - DONE ... with the new forum the anti-bot protection was updated to give a very strong protection
Divide the forums into sections in a better way and add more categories into the anime section. - ALMOST DONE ... the forums have been shifted, we still have to add more anime categories
Add BBCode tags like the YouTube tag and update the FAQ accordingly. - DONE ... added the YouTube, Google Video, Spoiler, Glow and some other tags.
Add new smilies.
Add a downloads section for anime soundtracks and FMV / AMV clips. This is a bit tricky since anime soundtracks are copyrighted. - DONE ... anime soundtracks and FMVs won't be added because of copyrights.

Hacks for the forum:
Update the Image Gallery and make separated anime sections for Original Art and FanArt. The 2 sections should be sorted by Anime Name - ALMOST DONE ... we still have to add the 2 sections
Update the RPG with a newer and completed version.
Update the effects store. - DONE ... updated to vBPlaza
Update the shoutbox. - DONE ... installed my own
Bring back Asuka. - DONE
Add a journal or a blog. - DONE ... installed the vBulletin Blog system
Add the Quick reply hack. - DONE ... came with vBulletin
Add a Custom title hack. - DONE ... came with vBulletin
Add the Arcade hack. - DONE ... installed V3 Arcade

Front page:
Update the Front Page with a full new theme, layout and new features.. - DONE
Add a showcase for FanArt and Fan Fiction on the homepage. This might be linked on the forums with a script or something.. - DONE ... linked to the forums
Update the Front Page so Anime Reviews can be posted by users with a pre-made sample template. The review page will have a poll to vote how good the anime is ("Must watch" to "It's a waste of time") for everyone to vote.

Sorry for the late feedback.

1st time I checked the colors all seemed okay.
This last time they're still okay, but a little bit washed out. Probably because of the blue background. Nothing serious enough to worry about.

On Acid Tech, they're fine probaly because of the much darker background. On my monitor it reads almost black. Which is fine. ^^

Time for another update. It's been a while and between my exams and little to absolutely no time I was actually able to make something new. This time I didn't work on any new forum features, but rather on a new site layout. For now it's still in Beta but very soon it will be made public (if all goes well in a few days). I still have to fix a few minor bugs and is all set. Here I made a preview of how the page will look like for a guest. Registered users will have a few more things, like a direct link to their forum profile and the time set to their own timezone.

If there is anything you think should be changed, added or improved feel free to post it here. Feedback is appreciated as always. ^_^

Maybe it's just me. Maybe it's just my monitor and the way it's interpreting colors. But it looks dead. I mean really. Like an invitation to a funeral. Sorry, but that's my impression. Maybe by the time artwork goes up, and thumbnails for the different sections, and so on, it'll brighten up a little bit?

Of course, I am totally into Acid Tech Red so anything with especially a really dark attitude isn't going to be appealing.

Not sure frank ... the layout is of the same color as CodeBlack (as Mac said it's supposed to look very similar to the default theme). If CodeBlack look the same as the site then I think it's fine as it is. As brightening stuff up I already reduced it twice due to Mac complaining about the bright box.

Yes, I'm aware of that but I don't think I will be able to make a layout that would match all the themes. I can try playing with the CSS and make it so it changes depending of the layout used on the forums, but that's pretty much all I can do to make it appeal with AcidTech and the other layouts.

Ah, no ... I accepted to help Mac upgrade the site and I'm planning to finish my job, the issue are the exams. This is the exams period and I don't have much time to do anything. Thanks for the welcome back though x_x;;

Yeah, I figured this monitor was displaying colors differently after all that stuff from earlier. At least I know it's not a total, flat black everywhere else.

Maybe I'll go to the library and check it on theirs. Should have done that anyway.

@Flash: Not a problem really. Not one worth trying to mess with anyway. You and Mac have a better handle on the layout, etc., than I do so I'm not really suggesting any changes.

A little update for the forum.

People using browsers with search support (two of them are Internet Explorer 7 and newer and Mozilla Firefox 1.5 and newer) can see a new search engine in their Search option in the top-right corner.

I updated my To-Do list (http://www.animechatforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=236241&postcount=37) and discovered we have finally completed most of the things we wanted to do on the forum. Right now I'm working to bring back the Arcade and the RPG. I hope to install the Arcade soon enough, maybe today, but almost for sure tomorrow. Stick to this thread for updates. ;)

EDIT: I've been able to install the Arcade. For now it has only 5 games, since we have some issues with the transfer of the others, but we will do our best to add them shortly. Until then, have fun with these ones. ^_^

EDIT2: OK, we have installed 44 more games. Right now we have a total of 49 games. Have fun playing. ^_^

It's been ages, since this was updated and I think I can afford a small double post. O_o;;

Today we have updated the first page (http://www.animechatforums.com/) (aka the index). There is not much to tell you about it, since there are no features for you to use. The layout has been made, so it matches the default forum one, links have been updated, now the site knows who you are (it works with the forum's user database) and Mac can finally make posts without editing the code. Later I'm going to add the styles of the other forum layouts, so users will see the index as they see the forum.

I'll keep you updated as I deem necessary.

I was away all weekend and earlier this week (at a mini smash tournament ... barely slept u_u) so there's still a lot that needs to be sorted out, such as getting some unique banners for the homepage that won't show up on the forum itself.

I talked to Mac about the menu. We decided to leave the text with the current font to avoid a boring first page; however, if you don't like the current font, you can suggest a font that's not the same as the one used for the rest of the site.

The idea was to make the frontpage look like the forum - makes the forum feel more "integrated" with the site if the homepage looks similar. I'm sure over time things will be added (new links and pages and stuff) and more banners. lots of Rei banners. :3

I don't mean to be grave digging since I know this thread is over two months old now, but I have a question. Do you plan on upgrading to version 4.0.2. Its actually really nice and rather stable considering its point in development.

As of yet I've heard nothing but negative feedback on vB4 (most of the old vB team quitting) and also a lot of things that this site has don't work on vB4 yet. Even if I wanted to upgrade, I lack the funds right now. :P

ok well I was just wondering. I know a lot of people say bad things about it, but i've had no problems with it at all. As for the coding, well most of it is very easy to convert as long as you know PHP :P
