(long) In Panama, they have critters called Palmetto Bugs, which are basically giant flying cockroaches (see pic of palmetto bug vs normal roach, it's the big one): http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/1567/roachespg9.jpg We have the American ones here in Florida, in Panama they get bigger than that.
I had to go up to the attic of a building to search for some equipment. The attic was lit by two very dim bulbs hanging from the ceiling. Someone had stored holiday decorations in a box up there, including Indian corn (I guess for Thanksgiving). The palmetto bugs had found the corn and multiplied prolifically. I accidently knocked the box over, and thousands of giant flying bugs filled the air, enough to almost completely block the light. Thousands of bugs all flying at once is impressive, and noisy. With every step I smooshed at least two. And of course they were landing on me and crawling all over me. It was like something from a horror movie. I found it more annoying than scary, but when I tell people about it they get all squirmy.

Sleeping, one night two of those thought my shoulder would make a good meal. They were underneath the pilow, munching away on my shoulder that was exposed at the edge of the pillow. I woke up, pulled the pillow away, and here were these two monsters. They didn't live long! And I didn't let them fly away.

Cockroaches will, in fact, eat anything. Concrete, fecal matter, limestone, cardboard, each other.

the jelly fish are going to rule the planet in the water, and the cockroaches on land. Ask any evolutionary scientist!!

I was fencing sabre on Saturday. My opponent tried for a head cut, which I parried, and then I did a lunge to counterattack. He was backing away so I put some extra effort into it in order to reach him. The sabre hit him on the chest, then broke about six inches from the end, and the broken end hit him in the same place. Fortunately the break was almost flat. If it had been a jagged break, it might have penetrated his jacket, which could have been very very bad.
