Arika Yumemiya has traveled far in search of her goal: the prestigious Gualderobe Academy. This is the school where young girls are trained to become Otomes, protectors of royal leaders throughout the lands. Here, Arika makes plenty of friends, but some enemies know something about her past that she does not. Nevertheless, her spirit and determination will keep pushing her forward. --- Adapted from it's predecessor, Mai-HiME, this series is not a direct sequel, but an alternate universe setting featuring some of the Mai-HiME cast (though with different personalities).
thats the basic story, most consider this an alternate reality of mai hime but i think its more of a sequal that occurs several hundred years later with the mai hime characters reincarnated without thier hime powers but otome powers
this series has alot to do with Mai Hime so those that wont watch it will be confused from the start but heres a dictionary for terms
Hime
stands for highly advanced materializing equipment(basiclly the scientific way to say a hime manipulates photons to form weapons).they also have a child(a guardian beast).sounds good, but if it dies in battle so too would the 1 person a hime cares the most for..ya know family, crushes, ect.
only child in Otome is Gakutenou(midori's child) altho he's ALOT bigger then he was in hime
orphan
nagi said they and a child are basiclly the same creature, only thing i can say that makes them different from a child is thier organic bodies and fact they are masterless
otome
females with nanomachines in the body which give them hime like powers(they lack a child however) bu theey will lose these powers if they...have sex...well if its a male that is as its because the X chromosom destroys the nanomachines.all Otome have a safety that prohibits them from using thier powers without either their masters permission or "the founder" declaring an emergency and disengaging the lock.
slave
similar to the orphens of mai hime but having mechanical bodies now,and they arent from another reality like childs and orphans.if they die their masters do as well
5 pillars
5 otome that can control the founder during emergencies and can use thier powers freely without a master
master
all otome make a contract with a king or queen after they become meisters, the contract binds the two together so the yfeel each others pain and if 1 die so too does the other.(its supposed to prevent war by putting the rulers life on the line i guess)
i noticed where in mai hime there was a red star near the moon which was the sourcce of a hime's power.in mai otome theres a blue star in the hime star's location(its not there because this isnt earth) its not the source of an otome's power but its a nice thing to notice.
anyway i found this series interesting,it was kinda humorous at 1st watching Mashiro and Arika trying to find a way to remove thier accidental contract as well as her bumblings in the academy but it was also quie emotional.i kinda wish the series would state exactly why earthen technology is considered lost technology, all thats really known is half of this nameless planet that isnt earth was destroyed in a war between all 12 kingdoms and that an organization called Swartz wants gaderobe's sealed technology in the forbidden library, and Asgad wants Gaderobe's nanotechnology because it increases the bodies ability to heal and they are suffering from a fatal unnamed disease caused by a nuke or something wiping thier county off the map...
the 2nd half was quie a turn lots of depressing scenes as well as constant losses of the heros.things dont really turn up till the otomes come up with a plan to get "the founder" back online.lets just say all otomes get thier powers from "the founder"and if anything happens to her nomore powers for those without a master
im sure your wondering what the founder is,but its the 1st otome who sleeps below the academy, not sure if that means dead or stasis though(any more would be spoiling it for you guys)
the action is quite frequent, destructive, and brutal once it gets going in episode 17.and i found the fact that all these powers the characters had were do due programs(any1 thats watched Mai Hime knows Miyu is a battle android with anti materilaizing weaponry) quite interesting to see what the studies of a hime's powers would eventually lead too.what the villians are doing is noble, its just that they do it in such a sadistic way it seems like they want to destroy everything and not bring back the "Golden Era"
i give this anime's musicoriginality, and animation a big 10/10 the history of the world could use work however so i give i an overall 8/10 rating not romance in this 1,however i was happy to see Akane finally getting the nontragic romance she deserved compared to the Hime version of her.but i was dissapointed with some of the otome characters roles like natsuki not fighting at all.
